165 When night passes, and the sky first begins to redden, and the birds, sprinkled with dew, begin to sing; and the traveler sets down the half-burned torch that kept him vigilant in the night; and the country farmer sets out to his usual work; the Pleiades will begin to relieve their father’s shoulders, who are said to be seven. However, only six are accustomed to exist. Or it may be because, of these seven, six fell into the embrace of gods: for example, they brought Sterope to sleep with Mars; Alcyone and, you, beautiful Celaeno, with Neptune; and Maia, Electra, and Taygete with Jupiter. The seventh, Merope, is married to you, the mortal, Sisyphus. She regrets it, and alone in the shame of her action, she hides; just like Electra, not suffering to observe the downfall of Troy, put her hand in front of her eyes.
